Trataka Meditation | A Mindful Practice

Trataka is an ancient Hatha Yoga meditation practice originating in India. The practice clears the mind, balances the nervous system and is said to relieve depression, anxiety, and insomnia. If you have trouble focusing during regular meditation, try this practice and get lost in the mystical flame.

To practice:
1. Light a candle in a dark room
2. Sit in a comfortable position and place the candle 2 ft. In front of you
3. Close your eyes and take 3 deep breaths
4. Open your eyes and gaze at the flame as long as possible until they strain or begin to water
5. Close your eyes and find the flame in your mind’s eye or anja chakra between your eyebrows (third eye)
6. When the remnant of the flame fades, open your eyes and repeat.

This soothing practice is a wonderful reminder to burn bright, not out. If you’re recovering from burnout this is the perfect thing to incorporate before bed to rest your mind and prepare for the sleep you so desperately need and deserve!
